Following worried media reports, Home Office has issued a reassuring update on the EU Settlement Scheme for EU nationals residing in the United Kingdom.
In a nutshell: there is no immediate threat to free movement. All EU citizens and their family in the UK can still apply to the EU Settlement Scheme until at least December 31, 2020, deal or no deal. If an eligible EU applicant happens to be outside the UK when Brexit finally happens, this person will still be able to enter the UK.
EU nationals who fail to apply to the EU Settlement Scheme by October 31, 2019, will retain their rights to work and study as well as the usual benefits. EU citizens will be entitled to apply for these benefits and services in the same manner as before.
