The UK Home Office confirm That Even with No Brexit Deal the UK Settlement Scheme Will Remain

The Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union, confirmed that even if there is no Brexit deal the EU Settlement Scheme will be maintained, enabling European nationals and their families living in the UK by March 2019, to continue to live, work or study and have the same benefits as pre-Brexit. The Settlement Scheme will be fully operational as planned by 30 March 2019.

The Home Office also confirms their commitment to grant Settlement Status rather than refusal and will be more lenient to EU nationals, who will for example not be refused status for not holding a comprehensive insurance or for not being economically active.  The UK would continue to honour the rights of the EU Citizens to be able to live in the UK for five consecutive years without losing their right to return, and once granted the status under the scheme is secure.

Should the UK leave the EU without a deal then there would be some changes to the Settlement scheme, specifically with no implementation period set, the application deadline would be 31 December 2020. Further details of these changes can be found in the policy document or on the Gov.UK website.
