After lengthy discussions, the minimum naturalisation period in Portugal will be set at 10 years for citizens of most countries and 7 years for citizens of Portuguese-speaking countries and EU member states.
What other options were discussed?
On October 17, the Social Democratic Party (PSD) proposed reducing the periods to 5 years for citizens of Portuguese-speaking countries and EU states, and 7 years for others. However, two days later, the party changed its position, increasing the terms to 6 and 8 years, respectively.
When will the changes take effect?
The final vote will take place on October 28. Before being signed by the president, the law may still undergo amendments — although it is most likely the final version.
For those who submitted their citizenship applications before the new law comes into force, the previous rules will continue to apply.
Citizenship for children of foreign nationals
Children born in Portugal to foreign parents (who are not diplomats) may obtain citizenship if one of the parents has legally resided in the country for at least 5 years at the time of the child’s birth.
Citizenship through marriage
A foreigner who has been in a de facto marriage with a Portuguese citizen for more than 3 years at the time of application may obtain Portuguese citizenship after a court decision.
