A bill was passed in Antigua & Barbuda’s parliament last summer, allowing for the payment of the country’s citizenship investment programmes in Euros and Cryptocurrencies. Prime Minister Browne acknowledged that interest in alternative payments had not been significant – most likely due to the lack of awareness about the option; “So far, in terms of payments by cryptocurrency, the activity has been minimal” he went on to add “when more people become aware that we accept payments in cryptocurrencies, I’m pretty sure that the demand for that will increase.”

There are plans to extend the payment method for the Antigua and Barbuda CIP further in a way that is certain to be welcomed by the programme’s largest constituent. Prime Minister Browne commented:

“We continue to find ways and means to make our programme more attractive and to provide investors with payment mechanisms that are easy. One of the things that we’ll be doing shortly – I would say within the next 30 days – is that we’ll be broadening the programme to accept Renminbi (RMB, Chinese yuan), so that our Chinese investors, in particular, can more easily make payments.”

Chinese applicants account for up to 60% of programme participants, so providing them with additional payment mechanisms such as in RMB or cryptocurrencies could see this CIP become a more attractive proposition.
