The UK offers citizenship for 3 million Hong Kong residents. Are you affected? Astons can help
The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Boris Johnson vows to introduce a five-year visa for as many as about 3 million Hong Kong citizens with British national (overseas) status. Johnson's decision is a reaction to the new security law imposed by China over Hong Kong.
The controversial law came into power on Tuesday, 30 June. The United Kingdom denounced this power move by Beijing and treated it as a clear and serious breach of the Sino-British Joint Declaration, signed in 1984 in order to smoothen the transition of Hong Kong from British rule to China's jurisdiction.
Before that, Hong Kong citizens with British national (overseas) status could visit the UK visa-free and stay for six months per year without rights to work and settle in Great Britain. Johnson's decision changes this rule and allows BNOs to spend unlimited time in the UK, work and live there, and provides a clear path to British citizenship.
