Malta’s Citizenship by Investment Program (CIP) has been a tremendous success by any measure.

The country’s CIP is considered one of the most desirable by investors interested in gaining a second citizenship. Now Malta is forecasting a higher budget surplus next year due to the number of investors the country expects to welcome in the coming year.

Last year Malta’s economy grew by 6.4% which put it second in growth behind only Romania which grew 6.9%. Malta’s budget for 2019 is expected to total 1.3% of the country’s GDP. If the government’s forecast is correct then 2019 will mark Malta’s fourth consecutive year of budget surpluses. That is a dramatic change for the country. Before 2015, Malta had not experienced a budget surplus since the 1980s.

Malta’s citizenship program is credited for this financial turnaround. Fully 62% of next year’s budget surplus is expected to come from the infusion of capital through the Malta CIP.
