British people love tea.... they REALLY love it

OK, it's a bit of a cliché, but all those stories you've seen about British teatime are true, and once you arrive in the United Kingdom you may well be surprised by how much the Brits love tea. In fact, drinking tea really is a national past time over here.

If Brits want to have a long conversation, it's done over tea; if they want to comfort a friend, it's done over tea; if they want to have a break from work, it's done with.... you get the idea!

And by the way, British tea is the best tea in the world – if you don't believe us, just give it a try.

Football is played with their feet

If you are moving to the UK from North America, then you may be expecting men wearing helmets to enter the field of play when you hear the word 'football'. Don't! 'Soccer' is 'football' in the UK and you are sure to stand out like a sore thumb if you don't acknowledge that.

If you'd like to see some football, England is home to some of the very finest in all the world, with great stadiums, packed crowds and awesome atmospheres. Visit here for more information on tickets.

They are not all English

If you go north or west, then you will end up in Scotland or Wales. A large majority of people from these areas won't be too happy to be called English! This is also true in Cornwall.

People rightly have a huge amount of pride in their Scottishness and Welshness (and Cornishness), and have a clear and distinct identity which comes from that. If you manage to get across the Irish sea and go north, you will go to another principality that is also British: Northern Ireland.

Getting to grips with what Great Britain actually is (one country made up of four countries??) can be quite confusing for UK visitors (and in all honesty, for British people too). Just don't forget that this is an old country with tons of history, and the fact that it is one country now isn't to ignore the hundreds of years of history that preceded its union of England and Wales with Scotland in 1707, and then with Ireland in 1801, and then with just Northern Ireland when the rest of Ireland became independent in 1922.

Check out the comedy

The Brits are famous for many things, but if you only embrace one element of their culture, then let it be their comedy. When it comes to being funny, the British are better than anyone. Just look at Monty Python, Eddie Izzard and Simon Amstel to name just a few.

Those three come from three different generations and are all brilliant. The British have always produced the best comedians out there, so if you only embrace one part of their culture, let it be the laughs.

Get out of the cities

British cities are wonderful, but there is a real charm to the British countryside. The lush hills, woods and local charm will take you over and you will absolutely love it. It's quite simply a mind-blowing experience seeing everything this terrific country has to offer.
